LECTURES

PAGS co-organized the 2019 Water Forum last April 4, 2019 at UP-NIGS

The Philippine Association of Geology Students joined the Geological Society of the Philippines in convening the forum entitled “El Niño, water infrastructure planning and the supposed water crisis: Facts and figures” which was held last April 4, 2019 at the National Institute of Geological Sciences Audio Visual Room, University of the Philippines - Diliman. Several speakers provided valuable information and insights on Metro Manila’s water situation.  Ms. Rusy Abastillas of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) talked about the prevailing El Niño event, its effects on the Philippine climate, and the climate outlook. She highlighted that the dry spell may last from April to May, but conditions may improve by June. Dr. Guillermo Tabios III from the UP National Hydraulic Research Center gave an assessment on the cause of the water disruption in several areas in Metro Manila, particularly in the east zone. He pointed out that the increased demand for water was not met with an appropriate increase in supply. Meanwhile, Dr. Patricia Sanchez of the UPLB Interdisciplinary Studies Center for Water enumerated the different water resources available to Metro Manila and the factors to consider in developing water infrastructures. Mr. Ramon Alikpala of FutureWater Asia, introduced the idea of integrated urban water management. He emphasized that we should not only be looking at water supply but should focus on managing water demand as well. This event was co-organized by GSP and PAGS, together with the UP National Institute of Geological Sciences, the Rushurgent Working Group, the UPLB School of Environmental Science and Management, the UPLB Interdisciplinary Studies Center for Water, the National Research Council of the Philippines and the UP Geology Alumni Association.

'Geosciences 2020+' talk of Dr. George Bacuta

last Feb 11, 2019

Dr. George Bacuta, an alumnus of UP Geology who is currently working with the US Army Corps of Engineers, gave a talk at the NIGS Lecture Series titled "GeoScience 2020+: Opportunities and Possibilities" last February 11, 2019. This talk was co-organized by the Geological Society of the Philippines. In his talk, Dr. Bacuta said that jobs for geoscientists are now at the downstream sectors of the minerals and oil industries. He advised Geology students to expand their knowledge base and stressed the importance of having an appreciation of math, physics and chemistry. He emphasized that to survive in the competitive job market, one must be adaptable and prepared for laneshifting during downturns. He finally added that machine learning and big data are new ways to go forward in the profession.

28th NIGS Lecture Series

Mr. Douglas Kirwin, President-Elect of the Society of Economic Geologists, gave a talk entitled “The Exploration Business: Current Challenges and Future Trends” at the National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS), University of the Philippines Diliman last April 18, 2018. His talk was attended by geology and mining engineering students from UP, Mapua University and Adamson University, as well as representatives from the academe and the industry sector. This event was organized by NIGS, Iuvenis Orbis Geological Fraternity, Philippine Association of Geology Students – Society of Economic Geologists Student Chapter and the Rushurgent Working Group. you may get a copy of the presentation in the RWG website (http://rwg-tag.bravehost.com)

Yearly Lectures

Faculty members of the Rushurgent Working Group (RWG) provided lectures during the Geology Board Review last August 27, 2017 at the CAP Auditorium, Davao City. This review was organized by the Society of USeP Geologists (SUG) in partnership with the PAGS-SEGSC.  As in the previous years, the lectures given during the review sessions were on Exploration Geophysics (Dr. Carla B. Dimalanta), Geomorphology (Dr. Noelynna T. Ramos), Geochemistry (Dr. Betchaida D. Payot), Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology (Dr. Betchaida D. Payot) and Economic Geology (Barbie Ross Villaplaza). The lectures were attended by sixty-one (61) geology graduates from the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP).

(A) Dr. Carla Dimalanta, PAGS SEG Student Chapter Faculty Adviser, giving an overview on the exploration for ore deposits using geophysical methods. (B) A lecture on geomorphology was given by Dr. Noelynna Ramos. (C) Dr. Betchaida Payot gave lectures on geochemistry and igneous and metamorphic petrology. (D) Ms. Barbie Ross Villaplaza giving her lecture on mineral deposits.

Ad Astra: Planetary Geology and Space Science

The Association of Geologists and Geological Engineers of Mapua University (AGGEM) in partnership with the Philippine Association of Geology Students – Society of Economic Geologists Student Chapter (PAGS-SEGSC) conducted a seminar with a theme “Ad Astra: Planetary Geology and Space Science” last August 23, 2017 held at Mapua University. The speakers were Dr. Ernest Macalalad of Mapua University who shared his expertise in Astrophysics; Mr. Christopher Lu of Astronomical League of the Philippines who gave his audience a tour of the Solar System through his presentation; and Engr. Camilo Dacanay of the Philippine Astronomical Society who tackled the Anatomy of Geologic Activities and Climate.

Igneous Petrology, Petrography and Geochemistry

Last February 6, 2017, Mr. Emmanuel Codillo, Geologist Licensure Exam (November 2016) Topnotcher, gave a lecture on Igneous Petrology, Petrography and Geochemistry to the PAGS-SEGSC Members held at the University of the Philippines - National Institute of Geological Sciences Multi-Purpose Room. The lecture focused on igneous petrogenesis, specifically on how igneous rocks form with different compositions and their modes of formation. The discussion began with General Geology topics which include the Earth, its layers, and composition, down to the minerals, rocks and processes shaping the Earth. Macroscopic igneous rock textures were also explained and correlated with their implications on the rock’s history and formation. The discussion on petrography was about the different textures of igneous rocks observed under the microscope and why such textures form. The discussion on Geochemistry focused on discussing the different variation diagrams related to igneous rocks and how these diagrams are helpful in determining the compositions of igneous rocks.

(A) Mr. Emmanuel Codillo discussed concepts on Igneous Petrology, Petrography and Geochemistry. (B) The participants and members of the PAGS-SEGSC who attended the lecture of Mr. Emmanuel Codillo at the UP-NIGS Multi-Purpose Room. (C) PAGS-SEGSC officers with the guest lecturer, Mr. Emmanuel Codillo.

kALAMidad: Geological Hazards and Natural Disasters-Prevention and Mitigation

As part of the society’s 2016 Geology Month, the PAGS-SEGSC and the Association of Geologist and Geological Engineers of Mapua (AGGEM) hosted a seminar with the theme, “kALAMidad: Geological Hazards & Natural Disasters – Prevention and Mitigation” last November 24, 2016 at the Audio-Visual Room 2 of Mapua University. The seminar focused mainly on disaster geology, disaster preparedness and management, and disaster risk reduction in the Philippines. The main goal of this event is to raise awareness on disaster preparedness and to disseminate the proper disaster management plan among geology and non-geology students. The seminar also presented the different disaster preparedness plans for various natural hazards and to highlight disaster risk reduction in the Philippines. The speakers in this seminar included Mr. Rio Marasigan of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council and Mr. Raymond Patrick Maximo of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
